“Great ideas emerges from useless fragments of thoughts,” Michael Bassey Johnson.

How does the changing landscape of television and other aspects of popular culture (e.g. movies, music videos, video games and comic books) affect societal trends and values? What effect do those trends and values have on popular culture? How does advertising affect consumerism, and what types of advertisements do people react strongly too? How much influence does the media have on viewers?

These are all questions I consider on this website. My focus is to provide a critical look on how popular culture reflects and shapes societal trends and values…and how the entertainment sector is affected by attitudes towards race, gender, and sexuality.

As a communications professional, I’ve studied how much influence the mass media hold, so I will also use this blog to explore how the media shape public opinion.

I also have included a portfolio page to highlight some of the projects I have worked on for the journalism school.

If you have any questions or recommendations for critiques, feel free to email me at mveltman@uoregon.edu; I’ll try to respond as soon as possible.
